August 31, 2020 (Last Updated August 25, 2021)

Marcy G.

Get to know self-published author, Kenny R. Hampton!

What is the title of your book?

The Underdog Mentality | Keys to Defeating Life’s Giants

Quick Summary:

The Underdog Mentality describes a journey of faith and strength; something that we all possess but is only unleashed when our backs are against the ropes. Everyone will encounter underdog moments. With these keys, you will be equipped with what you need to identify, face, attack and defeat any mental, physical, emotional and spiritual giants.

About the Author:

Kenny R. Hampton is a former pro athlete turned entrepreneur, award winning speaker and the breakout author of "The Underdog Mentality." He is a Detroit native whose passion about servitude has flourished into a lifestyle of sowing into the spiritual and mental growth journeys of professional athletes.  His youthful passion of becoming a professional athlete was the fuel in creating all of his successes in adulthood, despite a career altering injury.

Embracing the underdog mentality led him to a bachelor's degree, two Ivy League certifications, 12 years of raising a family, accolades, awards, NFL opportunities and a purpose-filled life. Sharing his personal experiences: Kenny provides spiritual guidance and mental health techniques to professional athletes at risk of self-destructing in North and South America.

What inspires you to write?

Sowing into the lives of other people is what inspired me to write. I love servant leadership and having a book enables me to serve a lot of people.

How often do you write?

During the writing process of The Underdog Mentality, I would speak the chapters on the weekends while my family was asleep for about 18 months. A transcribing application would transcribe the chapters and I edited them weekly to remove grammatical and punctuation errors.

What, according to you, is the hardest thing about writing?

The hardest thing about writing is actually doing the writing, which is why I leveraged the transcribing applications to assist with the writing of the chapters.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block? If so, how long does it usually last?

Writer’s block happened daily and it was challenging to completely avoid but I focused on the bigger picture and muscled through. It would last for days but I would pick it back up by the weekend.

Any tips you would like to share to overcome it?

Outlines are very helpful during the writing process because they’ll trigger key ideas and thoughts to convey certain points.

Describe your writing process. Do you have a routine?

Yes, I actually participated in a very helpful course, Author Speaker Secrets, to guide me through the book writing process instructed by my mentor Shawn T. Blanchard. The course is very thorough and allowed me to plug and play my book content.

Do you read much, and if so, who are your favorite authors?

I enjoy reading personal development books. My favorite authors are Price Pritchett and Tony Dungy.

Any advice you would like to give to aspiring writers or authors looking to self-publish?

I would encourage every aspiring author to seek a mentor within the industry. Having the guidance of an experienced author will save you so much time, money and resources.

What is the most rewarding thing about printing your book?

The most rewarding thing about printing my first book is being able to show others what’s possible when you don’t quit. Many people begin writing books but never finish. Everyone has a story and it’s time to share them.
